Journey Dateline: September 9, 2007
The title is quite a tongue twister, yet to my mind, that is an excellent road map of how convoluted the world of wizards, witches and other sorcery adept creatures appears to be to both non-believers and those who subscribe to the true belief faith in magic being a natural law all unto itself separate from science for some while true science to others.
Whether called magic or magick - wizards and witches are known for performing magical spells … some quite good and others quite bad … high magic, low magic or hearth magic (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) are only three classifications on the scale from good to evil pursuit of unearthly power.
In fantasy literature, movies and video games, a wizard usually spends his entire life studying and only through his own efforts of education and dedicated perseverence does he become adept at great feats of magic whereas a witch is generally someone born with powers to break or bend known natural / scientific laws into accomplishing impossible marvels.
Stereotype wizards can be good or evil - the good are generally pictured as elderly men with long white beards, staffs and being able to shoot lightning from their fingertips if needed to protect their king from evil minions of another kingdom or rampant monsters wandered into the castle by arcane means of evil.
Stereotype witches are generally not so lucky to be treated so kindly by authors. Many are portrayed as wizened ugly crones bent on malicious destruction of people, their lives and their property.
Airplanes full of people flying across the sky, submarines full of people on the ocean floor, cruise ships full of people crossing the sea and thousands of cars of people drving across bridges several miles above the ground are magical to me. I know they are marvels of science and engineering but that does not change the fact to me that it is out of my realm of knowledge how these feats are accomplished.
Why do ships not sink? That is a lot metal or wood or fiberglass on top of a lot of water! And they are TINY compared to the water around them!
Simple, every day, ordinary, normal things that we all take for granted in 2007 would be witchcraft to someone magically transported from the 1st or 2nd century to today. Would they find it to be good or evil magic?
Today’s first featured art from Imagekind is The Escape LorAnge by Marcel Lorange
Note from Barbara: The horses are lovely and the wizard giving directions for the escape from his Wizards Tower seem quite in character for a wizard who has studied his entire life for the power inherent in being able to project his image to a couple on the run from the current local political powers.

Today’s second featured art is Witch’s Moon by Sharon Maille-Rettich
Note from Barbara: This lovely raven haired witch flying across the full moon on her flower and vine draped broom takes a stereotype and changes it into a vibrant portrait of serene magical transportation.

Today’s third featured art is Sails and Spinnakers by Lehane Corley McCourt
Note from Barbara: These sailboats are so small in comparison with the oceans - they are a marvel of magic to someone who does not know or understand how they float atop all that water and they are a wondrous view of wind personified to see them racing along in the wind.
